Administration, Document Control, Finance & Office Management

These roles form the operational backbone of construction companies, ensuring that the office and projects run smoothly behind the scenes. From managing project documentation and supporting commercial teams, to handling accounts and maintaining office functions, they provide the structure and support that allows project teams to focus on delivery.

Role Purpose

Each of these roles has a distinct focus, but they are closely connected in supporting both projects and the wider business.

Administration

Typically provide general support across teams, handling correspondence, scheduling, and assisting with project coordination.

Document Control

Document Controllers play a more specialised role, managing the flow of project information such as drawings, RFIs, and technical documents, ensuring everything is correctly tracked, up to date, and distributed to the right people, particularly important on large, document-heavy projects.

Finance

These role are broad and there are many different functions within finance but overall they manage processes such as invoicing, payments, payroll, and reporting across the business.

These roles offer strong entry points into the construction industry, often without requiring a specific degree, and provide clear progression opportunities.

Career Path

The career path for administration, document control, finance, and office management is typically flexible and not limited to construction.

Most people start in junior or assistant positions, such as Admin Assistant, Document Controller, Accounts Assistant, or Office Coordinator, where they build up experience in organisation, systems, and day-to-day business operations. From there, progression usually leads into more senior roles like Senior Administrator, Lead Document Controller, Finance Manager, or Office Manager, with increased responsibility over processes, teams, and decision-making.

If you are thinking about a career in construction but you're not sure of what to do yet, admin is a good starting point to learn more about the industry or undertake a construction qualification whilst working.
